Effect of GLUMA Desensitizer on Bond Strength of Etch&Rinse Adhesives

Objectives: Aim of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of two glutaraldehyde containing desensitizers, GLUMA Desensitizer (GD, Heraeus Kulzer) and GLUMA Desensitizer PowerGel (GDP, a newly developed pasty desensitizer, Heraeus Kulzer) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of etch&rinse adhesives. Methods: Flat dentin surfaces (n=8) were prepared on SiC paper, grit 120 through 320 under water cooling. After removal of the smear layer using an etchant no desensitizer or the desensitizers GD and GDP were applied, left on for 60s and rinsed off with water. The adhesives iBOND Total Etch (IBTE,Heraeus Kulzer), Optibond Solo Plus (OSP, Kerr), Adper Scotchbond 1XT (ASXT, 3M Espe), and XP Bond (XPB, Dentsply) were then applied according to manufacturerxs instruction. After light curing of the adhesives Venus Diamond composite (Shade A2, Heraeus Kulzer) was bulk filled in cylindrical plastic molds (Ultradent equipment) and light cured for 20s. Light activation of both adhesives and composite was done using a LED curing unit (Translux Power Blue, Heraeus Kulzer). SBS was determined after 24h storage of specimens in 37°C tap water. Statistical analysis was done by ANOVA and LSD (p<0.05). Results: Mean SBS was determined as follows (same letters denote no significant differences):

IBTE

OSP

ASXT

XPB

no desensitizer

32.3 D,E

19.8 A,B

23.9 A,B,C

18.7 A

GD

29.5 C,D,E

20.8 A,B

25.2A,B,C

34.6 E

GDP

29.3 C,D,E

20.3 A,B

20.8 A,B

26.0 B,C,D

Conclusions: According to this investigation the use of GD and GDP prior to the adhesive application had no significant effect on the bond strength except for XP Bond. The use of GD increased the bond strength of XP Bond significantly. No significant differences were observed between GD and the new GDP. Bond strength differed between adhesives.
