Polish Retention of a Nanohybrid Flowable Composite

Objectives:  Maintaining well polished surfaces contributes to clinical success.  Polish retention of a nanohybrid flowable composite (G-aerial Universal Flo, GC America-GC) was evaluated.  Methods:  Beams (2mmX5mmX20mm; n=5) were fabricated for the composite and five comparison materials: Premise (Kerr-PR), TPH3 (Caulk Dentsply-TP), Filtek Supreme Ultra Universal (3M ESPE-FS), EsthetX HD (Caulk Dentsply-EX), and Tetric EvoFlow (Ivoclar Vivadent-TE). Three overlapping 40 second LED exposures (> 600 mW/cm2) were made from each side of the mold and beams stored in water for 24 hours at 37oC before polishing through 0.05 microns.  Baseline 60o gloss and Ra values were obtained.  Beams were then subjected to toothbrush abrasion using Colgate Total dentifrice at 170 cpm under a 2.3N load.  Gloss and Ra values were obtained after 1,000, 6,000 and 12,000 cycles.  Means of three measurements for each beam were used for two-way ANOVA (p<0.05). Results: Capital letters indicate statistically similar groups in rows, lower case in columns.
