Clinical effectiveness of two microabrasive agents: preliminary data

Objective: The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of two microabrasive pastes for the removal of superficial enamel opacities. Methods: Twelve subjects with at least two of the six maxillary anterior teeth (n= 52) with superficial enamel opacities were randomized into two groups according to microabrasive agent: AP- 37% phosphoric acid and pumice (n= 27) or WRM- 6% hydrochloric acid and silicon carbide (n= 25). Both pastes were rubbed onto the affected surface for twelve to 10 seconds/ clinical appointment. A maximum of two clinical appointments were scheduled. The enamel opacities were classified according to DDE index and recorded using a digital camera at baseline, 1-week and 1-month after treatment. Two blinded evaluators assessed the reduction of the enamel opacity area using a software (mm2). The aesthetic improvements were also assessed by the patients using a visual scale ranging to 1 (no improvement) to 7 (exceptional improvement). The data were analyzed by One and Independent-Samples T-test (p< 0.05). Results: Both AP and WRM groups were effective in removing superficial enamel opacities (p< 0.001). Additionally, the reductions of the enamel opacities areas at 1-week and 1-month recalls were not statistically different between AP and WRM (p> 0.1). Eleven subjects (91.7%) reported an improvement from 6 to 7 in the aesthetic appearance of the smile after microabrasion technique. Conclusions: The preliminary data suggested that both microabrasive pastes tested were effective for the removal and/or reduction of superficial enamel opacities.
