Objective: To assess the handling properties of a new automix self-adhesive dual-cure resin-based cement (RelyXTM Unicem 2 Automix, 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) and delivery system. Method: Ten general dental practitioner (GDP) members of a UK-wide practice-based research group, The PREP Panel, received syringes (one A2 Universal, one Translucent) of the material, two bags of mixing tips (one standard, one with fine or wide angulated tips), and instructions. A questionnaire was designed to evaluate their current cementation usage, and to rate the presentation, dispensing, and handling of the new material after ten-weeks use. Most responses were on a visual analogue scales (V A S). Results: All evaluators (100%) previously used a resin-based cement and four (40%) also used a conventional' system. The main reasons for choice of cementation materials were reliability and ease of use. With 148 restorations placed, the new material scored better for ease of use than the previously used resin-based material (4.9 v 4.5 on a VAS where 1 = difficult to use and 5 = easy to use) and nearly equal to the 'conventional' cementation system (4.9 v 5.0 on the same VAS). The new material was scored as ideal for viscosity (3.0 on a VAS where 1 = too thin and 5 = too viscous). All (100%) of the evaluators who used the fine endodontic tips for post cementation stated they were satisfactory. All (100%) the evaluators agreed that it was a clinical advantage not to need etch and bond prior to luting. 90% of the evaluators would both purchase the new cementation system and recommend it to colleagues. Conclusions: The new resin-based automix cementation material and its delivery system performed well in this evaluation, with scores for handling properties better than the equivalent previously used material.
