Objectives: To evaluate several properties of an experimental light curable only core build-up composite (Build-it LC) containing a new synthetic, bisphenol A free methacrylate resin (PHGMA), and compare Build-it LC with several commercial light curable core build-up composites. Materials and Methods: Molecular weight (MW), viscosity and refractive index (RI) of PHGMA were compared with BisGMA (Cook Composite and Polymers Co.). Viscosity was tested at 40 oC using RM 180 Rheomet. RI was tested on a Milton Roy refractometer. Build-it LC and other two commercial light cure only core build composites: Clearfill Photo Core (Kuraray) and SuperCure®-Q (Centrix), were tested. Depth of Cure (DOC), flexural strength (FS), water absorption (WA) and solubility (WS) were tested according to ISO 4049. Vicker's Hardness (VH) sample (3x10mm cylinder) was light cured 20s (Avente curing light, Pentron) and tested on Clark Instrument. Results: MW, viscosity and RI of the resins are shown in Table 1. DOC, FS, VH, WA and WS results of composites are listed in Table 2.

Table 2 Core Build-up Composite Properties
Build Core material | Build-it LC | Clearfill Photo Core | SuperCure®-Q |
lot# | 173709 | 2326BA | Capsules lot#77010 |
DOC (mm) | 6.0 | 4.2 | 3.5 |
VH | 63 | 70 | 68 |
FS(Mpa) | 157(13) | 136(7) | 127(9) |
WA/WS(ug/mm3/week) | 13/6 | 9/3 | 7/8 |
Conclusion: PHGMA has higher molecular weight but lower viscosity than BisGMA. The refractive index of PHGMA is lower than PHGMA, but higher than most non-aromatic dental resins. The build-up core material made of this new resin has comparable properties as BisGMA containing Clearfill Photo Core. Flexural strength and DOC of Build-it LC are better than SuperCure®-Q.
