Surface roughness of denture liners after using denture cleansers
Objective: It was evaluated the effect of commercial denture cleansers on surface roughness of two denture liner after the cleanliness of Candida albicans biofilm. Methods: Biofilms of Candida albicans were developed for 48 h on surface of two different denture liners one poly (methylmetacrylate) based and another silicone based. Specimens (10 x 2 mm) of both liners were fabricated and after finished and polished had the initial surface roughness (SR) measured. Subsequently, they were randomly assigned for one of four cleaning treatments (n=8): two alkaline peroxide (soaking for 3 or 15 minutes), 0.5% sodium hypochlorite (10 minutes) prepared in accordance with the manufacturer directions or distilled water as control (15 minutes). After the treatments, SR was again measured to analyze the effect of treatments on the surface roughness. Data was analyzed by ANOVA followed by Tukey test with significant level at 5%. Results: The final SR means were significantly higher than the initial measurement (p<0.05). Denture liners showed statistical differences between them and the liner poly (methylmethacrylate) based exhibited higher SR (p<0.05). No differences were found (P>0.05) among all denture cleanser evaluated. Conclusion: Within limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the cleaning process of denture liner was able to increase the SR of these materials.
