Clinical Performance of a New Nanotechnology-Based Dental Desensitizing Professional Paste
Objectives: This dentin hypersensitivity clinical study aimed to evaluate the clinical performance of a new nanotechnology-based dental desensitizing professional paste containing nanostructured hydroxyapatite (Desensibilize nanoP), which has essentially the same composition as tooth mineral. Methods: Forty three teeth were evaluated in this study. Teeth were randomly stratified into two balanced groups according to their baseline mean air blast sensitivity scores (severe or moderate): group 1 presented severe dentin hipersensitivity and group 2 presented moderate dentin hipersensitivity. Teeth were treated with Desensibilize nanoP (Dentscare/FGM group, Brazil), on a weekly basis. Dentin hypersensitivity examinations were conducted at baseline, and immediately after the 1st and 2nd application, using air blast sensitivity measurements. Teeth sensitivity records were conducted by the same dental examiner. Data were analyzed for significant differences by Friedman repeated measures of variance by rank test (p¬0.05). Results: A significant reduction in tooth sensitivity experience was observed upon Dsensibilize nanoP treatment. Immediately after the 1st application, ca. 21% of the teeth from group 1 presented sensitivity relief (from severe to mild or none hypersensitivity), and ca. 54% of the teeth related sensitivity relief from severe to moderate sensitivity. As for group 2, immediately after the 1st application, ca. 80% of the teeth presented sensitivity relief (from moderate to mild or none hypersensitivity). Immediately after the 2nd application, 83% and 90% of the teeth presented sensitivity relief (from severe or moderate to mild or none hypersensitivity) for groups 1 and 2, respectively. Conclusion: Dental hypersensitivity was relieved by the use of Desensibilize nanoP. Nanostructured hydroxyapatite is a suitable candidate to functionalize dental materials.
