Effects of a Sea Buckthorne Extract on the Periodontal Status
Objectives: It is well known that periodontitis is a infectious disease produced by a high number of bacteria inhabiting in the biofilm attached to the tooth. A diet low in important nutrients can make it harder for the body's immune system to fight off infection, said Michael P. Rethman president of the American Academy of Periodontology. Matherial and Method: Aim of this study was to determine the periodontal status related to the nutritional habits of a Romanian population of 20 persons . After this the persons were split in two equal groups. One group received a nutritional supplement based on organic sea buckthorne extract (made by S.C. PROPLANTA S.A. ) for 30 days, twice a day, while the other group received a placebo. GI and BI were determined at baseline and after 30 days. Results: More then 50% of the population showed bad nutritional habits with no fruits and row vegetables in their nutrition for over 4 days. After administration of sea buckthorne extract the gingival and periodontal status improved in the study group compared to the placebo group with the reduction of the GI and BI. This can be explained by the high amount of Vitamin C and β - carotenoids contained in sea buckthorne, as well as by the antioxitadiv effect of flavoinoids present in sea buckthorne. Conclusion: Practitioners should be aware of the importance of a balanced diet in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.
