Objectives: As complex operation of the needle electromyogram (EMG) is necessary to evaluate muscle activity of the lateral pterygoid muscles, muscle activity of the lateral pterygoid muscle in TMD patient has not been fully studied yet. Mechanomyogram (MMG), which is a non-invasive method, has been reported to be useful for the evaluation of the lateral vastus and the rectus femoris muscle activities. The purpose of this study was to report a novel non-invasive measurement procedure for the lateral pterygoid muscle activity using MMG.
Methods: Eight healthy volunteers (23.9±8.1 years) participated in this study. The subjects had no disorders of stomatognathic function. Each subjects sat in a chair with the earplug in which the condenser microphone in a left ear, and recorded the sound in the external auditory canal with a recorder. It measured in four mandibular conditions as follows: (1) the physiologic rest position, (2) the maximal opening position, (3) the opening position with resistance by their hand, and (4) the most anterior position. At the same time, the needle EMG with the lateral pterygoid muscles and the surface EMG with the temporal and masseter muscles were recorded in order to compare MMG. The root mean square (RMS) of MMG was analyzed, and the changes by the activity of the lateral pterygoid muscles were compared and examined.
Results: The RMS of MMG in the maximal opening position increased significantly compared with that in the physiologic rest position (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: From the results of the present study it was suggested that MMG would be an effective and useful measurement modality for the evaluation of the activity of the lateral pterygoid muscle.
