Radiological And Histomorphometric Analysis Of Two Xenografts: An Experimental Study

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this experimental study is to assess the properties of two xenografts (porcine vs bovine) as biomaterials for osseous tissue replacement, due to its high relevance in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Xenografts are followed-up for two months in order to compare them in terms of biocompatibility, resorption and osseous behaviour. METHODS: 16 N.Z albino rabbits were used. 4mm-cavitary osseous defects were made in right and left tibia. Right tibia defect was filled with a bovine xenograft (Endobon®) while left tibia defect was filled with a porcine xenograft (MP3®). 4 groups of study were determined: (I) 15 days, (II) 30 days, (III) 45 days and (IV) 60 days. A radiological (digital radiography and computed tomography) and histomorphometric (optic microscopy) study were carried out. Results were processed by statistical analysis.

RESULTS: This experimental study has asessed the biocompatibility of these two biomaterials. Low-relevancy inflammation was observed, only in group (I) and (II). A decrease in trabeculae volumen, noticed in the radiological study around an inside the porcine graft, shows a progressive resorption process for MP3®. This resorption occurs via cellular phagocytosis by macrophages.

CONCLUSION: Porcine xenograft (MP3®) is considered as a biocompatible, bioresorbable and osteoconductor material. Bovine xenograft (Endobon®) is also considered biocompatible and osteoconductor, however, the last one is a non-resorbable biomaterial (no resorption up to one year after the graft).
