Enamel Demineralization by Oral Candida albicans of Children HIV

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to analysis in vitro the potential of enamel demineralization of Candida albicans isolated from oral mucosa (M) and dentinal carious lesion (DCL) of HIV-infected children. Methods: Two isolates of Candida albicans were selected, being one from oral mucosa (M) and one from carious dentine (DCL), collected from definitive HIV-positive. Enamel specimens were previously prepared and fixed in Petri plates with Yeast Carbon base medium agar (YCB) supplemented with bovine serum albumin mean (BSA 1%). A total of 6 plates (3 deciduous and 3 permanents) with 12 dental specimens each, with the exposed enamel surface turned up and the other surfaces into the agar mean, were divided into the following groups: G1 - biofilm formed by C. albicans from the M; G2 - biofilm formed by C. albicans from the DCL; and G3 – control with no biofilm formation and before enamel specimens were removed by the 3th, 5th, 8th and 10th days after biofilm formation. The surface microhardness of all specimens was measured with a Knoop diamond indenter under a 50g - 15s and submitted to an Analise of Variance (ANOVA) and Turkey test (5%). Results: It had differences significant decrease of surface microhardness after biofilm formation by C. albicans among deciduous and permanent enamel (ANOVA, p<0.05). Conclusion: It's suggested the possibility that C. albicans might cause the demineralization of enamel surface in decíduos and permanent teeth, with differences in relation to the time and site of collection.
