Prevalence of Dental Fluorosis Among School Children in South-Eastern, Nigeria

Introduction:

In certain parts of Africa, fluorosis poses a serious public health problem. A number of studies have been carried out to determine its prevalence. In Nigeria however, there is limited data on dental fluorosis and no known work from south-eastern Nigeria.

Objectives:

This study was carried out to assess dental fluorosis and provide baseline data in 12-15 year old children in Enugu, a major city in south-eastern Nigeria.

Methods:

A multistage sampling technique was used to select 400 students. Questionnaires were administered and participants were examined for dental fluorosis using the Dean's index criteria according to WHO guidelines. The resultant data was analyzed using SPSS version 10.

Results:

There were 231 females (57.8%) and 169 males (42.2%); 11.3% had dental fluorosis. Most children (82.2%) with fluorosis had a very mild score while 6.7% had moderate score.

Gender, maternal education, the use of fluoride supplements, and socioeconomic status were not significantly associated with dental fluorosis but type of toothpaste used, was.

Conclusion:

Dental fluorosis does not appear to constitute a serious public health problem in Enugu. There is need for continued monitoring and further investigation into the fluoride intake from all sources.
