Caries Prevalence among CHILDREN in Russia

In 2007-2008 the Second Oral Health Survey was conducted in Russia.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of dental caries among children aged 6-and 12- years in Russia.

METHODS: Randomly selected 6-years-old (n=10477) and 12- years old children (n=11309) from different region of Russia were clinically examined for dental caries. The examination was conducted by calibrated specialists used WHO criteria and Assessment Form (WHO, 1995).

RESULTS: The results of the investigation showed that among 6-yr-olds prevalence of caries in primary dentition was 83%, mean dmft value was 4,83 (d - 2,87; f – 1,58; m – 0,38). In permanent dentition prevalence of caries was 12%, mean DMFT value was 0,23 (D - 0,14; F – 0,08; M – 0,01). Caries prevalence in 12-years-old children was 73%, mean DMFT was 2,49: decayed teeth – 1,13; filled – 1,32 and missed – 0,04. CONCLUSION: The results showed that among 6 yr-olds caries prevalence in primary dentition was high. Prevalence of caries in permanent dentition in 12-years-old children was low. The results can be used as a baseline for further planning of caries preventive programmes in different regions of Russia.
