Objectives: To compare some physical and mechanical properties of an experimental self-adhesive flowable composite (Exp.SAF) with two commercial non-stress bearing use compomers. Materials and Methods: An Exp. SAF and two light cured compomers (see table below) were tested. Flexural strength (FS) (n=6), water absorption (WA) and solubility (WS) (n=3) of the three flowable composites were tested according to ISO 4049. Dimetral tensile strength (DTS) sample (6x3 mm cylinder) was light cured 20s on each side and measured with an ATS machine after 24 hours in water @37oC. Vicker's Hardness (VH) sample (5x3 mm cylinder) was light cured 20s and the top surface was tested with Clark Instrument. The colors of the water sorption discs were measured for L, a, b before and after storing in distilled water for one week @37oC. Color change DE (n=3) was calculated as: DE=[(L-L0)2+(a-a0)2+(b-b0)2]1/2, Results: The test results of DTS, FS, VH, WA, WS and color change DE are listed in the table below. One-Way ANOVA showed statistical difference among the testing groups.
Flowable Composite | Exp. SAF | Compoglass® Flow | Dyract®Flow |
Manufacturer Lot# | Pentron A2 168488 | Ivoclar Vivadent A2 K50657 | Dentsply Caulk A2 080423 |
DTS(MPa) | 54.0(6.2) | 42.6(5.1) | 40.2(3.7) |
FS (MPa) | 136(10) | 112(13) | 78(17) |
VH (Kg/mm2) | 36 (3) | 26(2) | 21(2) |
WA (ug/mm3/wk) | 42(3) | 26(1) | 49(1) |
WS (ug/mm3/wk) | 7(1) | 4(2) | 6(3) |
Color change DE | 0.86 | 1.76 | 2.36 |
Conclusion: The Exp. SAF showed better properties than Composglass® Flow and Dyract®Flow in DTS, FS and VH. The water absorption of Exp. SAF is comparable to Dyract®Flow, but higher than Compoglass® Flow. The Exp. SAF has the least color shifting in distilled water for a week at 37 oC.
