Clinical Evaluation of a Self-Adhesive Resin Cement on All-Ceramic Crowns

Purpose: This study evaluated the clinical performance of a self-adhesive hybrid resin cement Ivoclar cement (Ivoclar-Vivadent) for use on all ceramic crowns over a one year period. Methods: Forty-two all ceramic crown restorations were placed in 34 subjects.  Following conventional all-ceramic tooth preparations, Zirconia ceramic crowns were seated and cemented with a self-adhesive hybrid cement following manufacturer's instructions. Forty crowns were evaluated at one year using the following criteria: Anatomic Form (AF), Color Match (CM), Marginal Integrity (MI), Marginal Discoloration (MD), Surface Staining (SS), Retention/Fracture (RF), Recurrent Caries (RC), Polish-ability (PO) and Sensitivity (SE).  The following results (in # of crowns) were found using a modified USPHS grading system (BL=Baseline, 6M=6 Months, and 1Y=One Year):

Results:  1.) MI, SS, and SC remained unchanged after one year.  2.)  One restoration debonded after one week but re-cemented with no further problems.  3.) One restoration had a small fracture at the interproximal contact.  4.) Three restorations had slight stain surrounding the tooth.  5.) Color match seemed to improve over time. 6.) No sensitivity was reported. Conclusion: This study indicates that this Self-Adhesive composite resin cement is acceptable for routine clinical use on all-ceramic crowns.  Study supported by Ivoclar-Vivadent, Inc.
