MBL Gene Polymorphism in Chronic Periodontitis in Turkish Population

OBJECTIVES: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a recognition molecule of the lectin pathway of complement and a key component of initiate immunity. Its deficiency has been associated with increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of MBL gene polymorphism with chronic periodontitis (CP) in a Turkish population and the influence of genotypes on response to the non-surgical periodontal therapy. METHODS: A total of 172 Turkish subjects were included in the present study. Genomic DNA was obtained from the peripheral blood of 83 patients with CP and 89 periodontally healthy subjects. MBL polymorphism was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. The data were analyzed by Chi-square test, logistic regression and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: Genotype distrubution and allele frequencies in this study were found in accordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium(p>0.05, X2<5.99).MBL gene at codon 54 B allele frequencies were 22.3% and 19.6% in CP and healthy group respectively (OR=1.17, [95%-Cl=1.15-8.6], p>0.05). There were no interactions between the treatment effect and genotypes (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the present study it might be concluded that MBL gene polymorphism is not associated with susceptibility to chronic periodontitis and responses to non-surgical periodontal therapy were not associated with polymorphic allele carriage of MBL gene in Turkish population.
