Caries expirience in children with disabilities compared to healthy children

Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare caries expirience in disabled and healthy children. The study took place in the city of Rijeka, Croatia.:

Methods: For the purpose of comparing dental health condition, two groups of children were examined: examined group with total of 80 disabled children (includes children with: cerebral palsy, mental retardation, Down syndrome, autism and hearing – speaking disorders) and control group consisted of 80 healthy children of the same age. Age range was 3 to 17 (mean age 10) years old. The examination was performed by using mirror and probe. The presence of clinical caries on the level of cavitation was determined. Data was collected in specially designed questinaire for that purpose. For statistical analysis data was assembled in «Excel 5.0/7.0» Microsoft program, and afterwards converted to a statistical program SPSS ver. 10 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, USA).Chi square test was used to determine weather there were statistically significant differences between examinees.:

Results: The relation between caries expirience scores of examined groups show that there is no statistically significant difference in any of age groups. In both groups the obtained results show that high percentage of children are affected by caries (58,82 - 100% for disabled and 76,19 - 100% for healthy children) and increasing values of caries expirience scores by age are determined.:

Conclusion: It is concluded that the level of preventive dental care is not developed good enough for disabled, as well as for healthy children. Dental care for both disabled and healthy children is not on a satisfying level and is unadequately organized. Corrective measures and actions should be taken to improve quality of this particular part of health care and changes should be done on all levels of health organization system in our region.:
