Gingivitis Suppression Effect of the Dentifrices Containing Curcuma Xanthorrhiza
Objectives: The antiplaque and antigingivitis effect of the de novo dentifrices containing bamboo salt(BS), Curcuma Xanthorrhiza(CX), Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate(DG), Ursodeoxycholic acid(UA) and various additives were evaluated using the 3-week split-mouth experimental study of gingivitis and in vitro study. Methods: 1.double blinded clinical trial using split-mouth experimental study: 57 male volunteers participating this study were randomized into 3 groups(BS group, BS+CX group, placebo group), instructed to brush twice a day putting on tooth-shield filled with each dentifrice for premolar region. The Gingivitis index(GI) and plaque index(PI) scores were evaluated at the baseline, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th week(recovery period) in tooth-brushing sites and tooth-shield sites. And, Gingival crevicular fluid(GCF) was collected to measure the amount of matrix metalloproteinases(MMP)-9. Repeated measure ANCOVA was used for the time series comparison and ANCOVA for the comparison between the groups. 2.In-vitro study:PDL cells cultured were treated by the mixture of CX, DG and UA and porphyromonas gingivalis culture fluid(15m/ml),and cultured for 3 days to measure the amount of MMP-2 using gelatin zymography. Results: The de novo toothpaste(BS+CX group) reduced GI(49.9%) in comparison with control in tooth-brushing part(p=0.024). But, The de novo toothpaste reduced GI(38.1%), MMP-9(13.4%) in tooth-shield part, which were not statisticallly significant(p>0.05). The mixture of CX, DG and UA suppressed the amount of MMP-2 does-dependently in vitro. Conclusion: The data indicate that the de novo dentifrices containing BS, CX, DG and UA have an significant effect to prevent gingivitis in tooth-brushing.
