Next generation non abrasive tooth cleaning gel

Objectives: The purpose of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the capacity of a next generation tooth-cleaning material (TC-01, GC Corp), which doesn't require polishing.

Methods: 1.Extracted human teeth were embedded into epoxy-resin. Their enamel sections were exposed and were polished to be mirror-finished surface in order to make test-samples. 2.Surface roughness (Rz) of the test-samples were measured using a Laser scanning microscope (LSM:OLS3500, OLYMPAS) as a baseline. 3.The test-samples were immersed into ferrum acetate solution for 24hours under vacuumed condition. After that, they were immersed into tannic acid solution for 24hours under vacuumed condition to make Tannic acid staining. 4.Tannic acid staining effect which consist of L*value, a*value, b*value, on the samples were measured using a spectro-photometer (Easy-shade, GC Corp). 5.The stained-samples were distributed into 2groups. Group1 (G1): The stained -samples were prepared a tooth cleaning by prophylaxis-paste (NUPRO with fluoride coarse, DENTSPLY) with handy-motor (ENDO-MATE, NSK) 1000rpm for 30second. Then, they were rinsed off with water. Group2 (G2): TC-01 was applied to the stained-samples for 10minutes but was not polished, after 10minutes they were rinsed off with water. 6.For baseline and after-treatment comparison, the surface structures of the prepared- samples were measured surface roughness using LSM. Additionally the cleaning effect on the prepared-samples were measured using a spectro-photometer and calculated ΔE to provide cleaning effect.

Results: Rz(µm) Baseline After-treatment G1 1.99(0.11) 7.11 (1.52) G2 1.88(0.14) 2.01(0.17)

Cleaning effect(ΔE) G1 34.82(2.11) G2 41.28(2.92)

The result showed that G1 treatment significantly increased surface roughness and G2 treatment is not. (one-way ANOVA, p<0.05). As for ΔE, G2 showed higher cleaning effect than G1(one-way ANOVA, p<0.05).

Conclusion: It was concluded that despite a TC-01 possesses higher cleaning capacity, TC-01 did not affect tooth surface.
