Community based research for developing oral health education materials

Introduction: The purpose of this research was to develop and test a series of CD-ROMs aimed at parents of toddlers, pregnant women, and children ages 7-11, on oral health and nutrition. Methods: Structured questions were asked in focus groups recruited at community sites: these included 5 groups of pregnant women, 6 groups of parents, and 5 groups of children, averaging 5 participants per group. Common themes emerged and framed the topics for vignettes in each CD-ROM (e.g. ECC, sources of fluoride, etiology of plaque). Each CD-ROM was tested with representatives of these target groups at WIC clinics and after-school programs. Ethnically diverse pregnant and postpartum women (n=97), parents of toddlers (n=98), and children ages 7-11 (n=107) completed a baseline questionnaire, then either viewed the CD-ROM (experimental group), or was not given any additional information (control group). Post-tests were completed immediately after viewing the CD-ROM or completing the baseline test. Results: For all three CD-ROM tests, experimental and control groups did not differ at baseline. Post-test comparisons revealed that pregnant women in the experimental group knew more about oral health during pregnancy and for their babies (p<.001), and gave more accurate responses on the etiology of ECC (p<.05) and sources of fluoride (p<.05). Parents of toddlers in the experimental group also revealed greater knowledge than controls in the post-test, specifically on healthy snacks (p<.001) and on general oral health for children. The groups did not differ on knowledge re: assuring good oral health. Conclusion: CD-ROMs can be effective educational tools for diverse groups in community settings. It is important to develop these tools by first determining the level and accuracy of oral health knowledge in the target population. This research was supported by CDC grant U48 CCU 009654.
