The utilization of Blackboard has become a necessity on many levels at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the various means by which Blackboard is being utilized in the classroom, clinic and school wide. Incorporation of Blackboard in the classroom such as downloading and taking notes on Powerpoint lectures, taking quizzes, viewing videos and searching external links from course websites on Tablet PC computers will be described. Chairside clinical applications of Blackboard using Tablet PCs will also be discussed including a mechanism for monitoring competencies. The system provides real-time chairside entry of student performance eliminating time lags between rendered care, data entry and generation of reports.  Student progress is tracked on a clinical course website with 1) completed procedures, 2) patient classification data and 3) clinical competency levels. Other Blackboard clinical applications such as downloading clinic forms and accessing the clinic manual chairside will be discussed. The use of Blackboard as a clearing house for committee assignments, strategic planning progress documentation and accreditation self study reporting will also be described. Results thus far include enhanced teaching and learning, increased clinical data management efficiency as well as being an efficient means to accomplish school wide initiatives.
