Implementation of a Three-tiered System for Innovative Delivery of Continuing Education

Videoconferencing and distance learning technologies have altered the delivery of continuing education (CE) such that audiences and speakers can communicate from remote locations. We piloted, implemented, and evaluated a system that allows speakers to deliver CE to three audiences simultaneously using the traditional classroom setting, streaming media over the Internet, and videoconferencing. The rationale for this system was to provide CE to rural and remote parts of Wisconsin where practitioners would have to travel at least three hours to participate in such courses. The distance can result in loss of up to a full day from their practices for a short course. Our school is one of the leading providers of CE in the state. Working with the state dental society, our continuing education office marketed, tested, and implemented a program named “CE Your Way” because the practitioner decides on the course delivery method that is most convenient. Courses for CE Your Way are selected based on content, time frame, and adaptability of the material to the three formats. The program was tested by a selected group of participants who took a course from one of the three venues and provided extensive feedback on content, delivery, and interactivity. The program was implemented in January 2004 and continues to the present. The classroom group takes the course in the traditional format using our high-tech classroom. The remote site group takes the class from one of twelve sites across the state, using videoconferencing with an IP connection and bridging service. The Internet group takes the class online, and has the ability to view slides, video, and an interactive chat that allows them to ask questions or make comments. We have collected data from eight programs and learned lessons about technical and programmatic feasibility, connectivity and compatibility, and user experiences and needs. In general, users are impressed with this system’s capabilities. We continue to improve the system and increase our user base.
