Purpose: To evaluate shear bond strength of new self-etching adhesives to dentin, cut-enamel, and uncut enamel and the effect of storage time on bonds to cut enamel.
Methods: Seven adhesive systems were tested: A. Adper- Prompt (3M ESPE); B. AdheSE (Ivoclar); C. G-bond (GC); D. I-Bond (Heraus Kulzer) E. Xeno IV (Densply); F. Xeno III (Densply) and G. Adper Single + (3M ESPE). Mounted extracted teeth were prepared by either sectioning through the dentin layer (Dentin Group), abrading the surface enamel (CutEnamel Group) or cleaning with pumice (Uncut-Enamel Group). Composites resins (corresponding manufacturers) were bonded to all surfaces using a mold with a 2mm cylindrical opening. Shear bond strengths were tested (Instron) after 24 Hrs water storage at room temperature (n=315). Cut enamel (n=105) samples were also tested after 20 weeks of water storage. ANOVA was used for analysis.

Conclusions: Bonds to dentin in groups A, C, E and G were not significantly different. Bonds in groups D and F were significantly lower (p=0.5)..
Groups C, D, F, and G did not exhibit a difference in bonds to the various substrates. A significant difference in bonds to cut enamel after 24 hr vs. 20 week storage was found in groups D and E. The study confirms the potential of new self-etching adhesive systems to perform at levels similar to conventional systems.
