A New Fluoride-Containing Bonding Material for Orthodontic Brackets in Vitro

Fluoride (F) is today often added to bonding and filling materials in order to reduce the risk for primary and secondary caries. Objectives: The aim of the present investigation was to study the F release from a new F-containing bonding material, Super-Bond-F (SunMedical, Japan), in vitro. Material and methods: Totally 11 F-containing materials were evaluated; 3 resin cements, 3 resin modified glass-ionomers, 2 glass-ionomers and finally 3 materials based on the Super-Bond formula (here called prototype F5, F7 and F10). A total of 20 identical cylindrical specimens of each material, with a free outer surface of 0.87 cm2, were made in metallic split models with an interior diameter of 5 mm and a height of 3 mm. After hardening, the specimens were removed from the models and transferred individually to plastic beakers with 2 ml of distilled water. After 2 hrs, they were removed and replaced in a new 2 ml of fresh water. This procedure was repeated after 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 days. The F concentrations were analysed in 0.5 ml-aliquots with an ion-specific electrode. Results: There was a continuous release of F from all 11 materials throughout the 20-day observation period. The ranking order of the F-release was the following: Vitremer > Fuji Luting S > Panavia > F10 > F7 > Fuji Ortho LC > Ketac > GC Fuji-glass > Xeno Cem > F5 > Maxicap. When the materials with the highest were compared with those with the lowest F release, there were several statistical significant differences (p<0.001, p<0.01 or p<0.05) Conclusion: The new F-containing bonding material Super-Bond-F, especially prototype F10 and F7, showed a high release of F even if it was somewhat less compared to some of the other tested materials.
