Developing a Database of Public Health and Community Sites
Objective: In 2003, the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Dentistry began implementing community-based partnerships for extramural clinical experiences for students. In the process of developing the program, we were confronted with the challenge of identifying, organizing, and updating information about community health centers, hospital programs, county and township health departments that offer comprehensive as well as preventive and educational services to underserved populations. Methods: We have gathered information from multiple sources of directories and lists, inquiry forms submitted to sites, and telephone inquiries in order to create a relational database to help identify and organize sites with varying degrees of oral health activities, operatory units, and support needs. Results: The compiled information aided in the design of a resource for up-to-date information about dental services provided at more than 100 locations throughout the state of Illinois which can be used as a quick management tool to identify future partnerships. Conclusion: The database improved productivity, allowing us to retrieve information quicker and aiding in numerous procedures such as mailing and e-mail promotions, and tracking our progress for partnering opportunities.
