Oral health promotion for rural Fijian children: Baseline caries experience

Background: Risk of dental caries is very high in rural Fijian children. An oral health promotion program is currently aimed at mothers and children, including infants, preschool, and primary school children in one rural district. In addition, these children and their mothers receive homecare oral hygiene products four times per year and, at the same time, the children receive topical applications of fluoride varnish. Mothers and their children in another district act as the reference group for this study. Objectives: The purpose of this presentation is to describe the baseline caries experience of the children. Material and methods: Children attending kindergartens and primary schools in the study and reference districts were dentally examined at the study baseline. Infants and mothers who attended a Maternal and Child Health Clinic, that common to both districts, were dentally examined there. Results: Data will be available shortly and this abstract will be finalised. Discussion: Conclusion:
