Bond Strength of Four Self-etching Bonding Systems to Enamel
Objective: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the shear bond strength of four self-etching bonding systems to enamel. Methods: Sixty, extracted, human, third molar teeth were cleaned, and embedded into metal rings with self-curing acrylic resin. The teeth were ground wet using 600-grit silicone-carbide paper to expose enamel. The samples were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=15) : Group 1 Clearfill SE Bond (Kuraray)(CSE); Group 2 iBond (Kulzer)(iB), Group 3 Xeno III (Dentsply)(XIII) and Group 4 Adper Prompt(3M ESPE)(AP). Enamel surfaces were treated with the self-etching systems according to the manufacturer's instructions. Following the application of the adhesive resin, resin composite (TPH Spectrum) were condensed into an Ultradent mould (diameter=3.2mm) and then light-cured for 40 seconds. The bonded specimens were stored in 37ºC water for 24 hours. The shear test was performed in a Zwick testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0mm/min. Results: The mean values were analyzed using the Student- t Test. The results were as follows: CSE = 18.3 ±2.9MPa, iB=7.5 ±1,6MPa, XIII= 17.5 ±2.8MPa and AP = 17.2 ± 2.3MPa. There was a statistically significant difference in shear bond strength between iB and all the other groups. Conclusion: The iBond self-etching system showed the weakest bond and is probably clinically unacceptable for adhesive bonding procedures.
