Polishing-Dependent Changes in Gloss of Composites

Objectives: To evaluate gloss of three resin composites after polishing with two polishing systems.

Methods: Two sets of disc-shaped specimens (n=5, D=10 mm, 2-mm thick) of each shade of 3 commercial resin composites were fabricated. Composites were polymerized following manufacturers' recommendations. After removal of the Mylar surface, one set of specimens was polished for 60 seconds using PoGo polishing system (Dentsply/Caulk, Milford, DE), while the other set was polished for 20 seconds using each of the following Jiffy polishing disks: coarse latch, medium latch, and HiShine (Ultradent, South Jordan, UT). Gloss was measured using a small-area glossmeter (Novo-Curve, Rhopoint Instrumentation, East Sussex, UK). The means and standard deviations were determined. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the data, and Fisher's PLSD intervals for comparison of means were calculated at the 0.05 level of significance.

Results: Gloss values (s.d.) of tested resin composites.

Gloss values marked with the same superscripted letters are statistically the same

The analysis of variance showed significant differences among composites, among shades and between polishing systems. Fisher's PLSD critical differences (p<0.05) for comparisons among composites, among shades and between polishing systems were 2.6, 2.6 and 2.1 GU (p < 0.001, power 1.0), respectively. Among 8 of 9 groups, the PoGo polishing system produced higher gloss values than Ultradent polishing system.

Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, the highest gloss values after polishing were ranked with Ultradent polishing system as AP>FS>EX and with the Pogo polishing system as FS>AP>EX, respectively. Acknowledgment: Supported in part by Ultradent Products.
