Objectives: To determine the association between the impact of oral health on quality of life among children and need for orthodontic treatment. Methods: Two hundred and seventeen child patients were screened for orthodontic treatment need using a number of professionally derived indices: Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON) and Dental Aesthetics Index (DAI). In addition, all children self-completed the 37 item child perception questionnaire (CPQ) to assess their oral health related quality of life. Results: Different prevalence of orthodontic treatment need was observed depending on the occlusal index employed. However, significant associations existed in the assessment of orthodontic need as determined by IOTN, ICON and DAI (P<0.01). Overall CPQ scores was associated with IOTN scores (P<0.05), ICON scores (P<0.05) and DAI scores (P<0.05). However, differences existed in IOTN, ICON and DAI's associations with CPQ domain scores. Assessment of orthodontic treatment need by combining both ICON and DAI criteria yielded greater significant associations with CPQ scores (overall and at a domain level) than any orthodontic assessment index alone or any other combination. Conclusion: Orthodontic treatment need (as assessed by IOTN, ICON and DAI) is associated with child oral health related quality of life (CPQ). The assessment of orthodontic need based on the criteria of both ICON and DAI is highly correlated with CPQ scores.
