Flow and film thickness properties of Epiphany root canal sealant

Objectives: This study evaluated the Epiphany (E) resin sealer compared with epoxy-resin based sealer AH Plus (A) in terms of flow, and film thickness properties, based on ADA Specification No 57. Methods: For flow test, a volume of 0.5 ml of cement was placed on glass plate (40x40x5 mm) using a graduated syringe. At 180 (± 5) s after the start of mixing, a load of 100 N plus the top plate with a mass of 20 (± 2) g were placed on top of the material. Ten min after the commencement of mixing, the load was removed and the average of the major and minor diameters of compressed disc of material was recorded (both diameters must agree within 1 mm). The mean of five such determinations was taken as the flow of the material. For film thickness, a volume of 0.5 ml of material was deposited on the center of one microscope slide glass (200 ± 25 mm2) and the second glass plate centrally on top of the sealer. At (180 ± 10) s after the commencement of mixing, a load of 150 N was vertically applied onto the top glass plate. Ten min after the commencement of mixing, the thickness of two glass plates and the interposed sealer film was measured. The difference in thickness of two glass plates with and without sealer was taken as the film thickness of the material. The mean value of five such determinations was taken as the film thickness of the material. Results: The results showed no statistical difference (p>0.05) between the sealers in terms of both properties: flow: E (35.8 mm), A (37.2 mm); film thickness: E (0.02 mm), A (0.01 mm). Conclusions: We concluded that flow and film thickness of both cements conformed to ADA standards.
