Spread Process of Bleaching in UK and Japan Questionnaire Survey

Objectives: There are more than 99% dentists which employ tooth bleaching methods in the US (CRA News). In comparison the spread rate of bleaching in Japan is 25-30% and a similar percentage in UK. Regarding tooth bleaching, to obtain information about the degree of concern, knowledge and frequency by request of the patient it is important to understand social phenomenon and it is helpful to expand on the practical use of bleaching. The purpose of this study was to obtain the spread process of bleaching in UK and Japan by use of questionnaires to dentists and dental students. Methods: Questionnaire was done optional unsigned conditions. Subject of this study, In UK, 113 dentists (Including students from School of dentistry The University of Liverpool of 5th grade). In Japan 140 dentists interested in tooth whitening, 85 students (School of dentistry Showa University Sophomore Class). Results: In the parenthesis is Japan, Has a patient ever asked about tooth bleaching? Yes 53%(95%), No 47%(5%), How do you explain the recovery of tooth color? Prosthesis Method 7%(28%), Bleaching 40%(44%), Counselling 11%(6%), Other 11%(15%), No Answer 35%. Your opinion about the recovery of tooth aesthetics. Positive 16%(68%), Negative 3%(8%), Depends on case 63%(21%), Don't know 18%(3%). Do you have the affirmative image to bleaching? Affirmative 23%(36%), Negative 8%(37%), Depends on case 57%(13%) Don't know 12%(14%). How do you perceive the color of your own teeth? No problem 45%(32%), Mildly Discolored 50%(53%), Moderately discolored 4%(9%), Severely Discolored 1%(2%). If yes, would you consider having your teeth bleached? Yes 30%(60%), No 26%(11%), Already had it done 2%(0%); Need more information 12%(21%). Conclusions: Spread process of bleaching was related to regional differences, national characters, attitude of dentist, educational system, the competent authorities and institution. To improve the situation, education of tooth color and bleaching is important.
