Clinical Evaluation of LSTR 3Mix-MP Endodontic Treatment

Objective: This aimed to clinically evaluate 3Mix-MP endodontic treatment using a combination of antibacterial drugs, i.e. metronidazole, minocycline and ciprofloxacin (3Mix), and macrogol and propylene glycol (MP) under the concept of 'Lesion Sterilization and Tissue Repair (LSTR) therapy'. Methods: Under informed contents, a total of 991 teeth were treated. Orifice of root canal was enlarged to create a medication cavity (diameter 1 mm and depth 2 mm) to place 3Mix-MP that was further sealed with glass-ionomer cement. At the next visit, the disinfected root canal was prepared with cares not to touch the apex area and filled using gutta-percha and root canal sealer as much as possible. In some cases (190, 19.2%), only medication was given without any other endodontic procedures (non-instrumentation endodontic treatment: NIET). Meanly 2.3 visits were needed for endodontic treatment. In most cases, treatment was completed with resin inlay, metal inlay or metal crown restoration. Results: Almost all cases (969, 97.8%) were successful because of disappearance of acute or chronic clinical symptoms, such as fistulae, abscess formation, purulent exudates, swelling or bite pain, and partial or full recovery of radiolucent periradicular lesions, if any at the first visit. The successfully treated teeth did not felt pain or discomfort on biting. Clinical success obtained regardless of root canal filling conditions. Of 602 cases followed up more than 7 years, 595 (98.8%) were evaluated as successful. In NIET, including cases in which previous root canal filling material was intentionally remained, 187 cases (98.4%) were also clinically successful. Conclusion: These indicate that 3Mix-MP endodontic treatment, including NIET, results in excellent clinical outcomes.
