Antimicrobial Potential of Epiphany RCS System

Objectives: This research was to investigate antimicrobial potential of a new endodontic product Epiphany Root Canal Sealant with Primer (Pentron Corp.) in S. mutans and E. faecalis using a standard diffusion test procedure. Methods: Diffusion method (Barry and Thornsberry, 1991) was used to examine the antimicrobial potential of Epiphany sealant with Primer. Phosphate buffered salt solution (PBS) and Peridex Oral Rinse were used as the negative and positive controls, respectively. Samples of Epiphany sealant with Primer were prepared following manufacturer's instruction (self cure at 37oC for 40 minutes) using filter disks (AP Prefilter Paper, Millipore Corp., MA). The test was performed in triplicate. Inhibitory effects of the test agents on the microorganisms were examined by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone after incubation for 24, 48 hours and 7 days. The data were analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The Student-Newman-Keuls method was used to determine the significance of differences among the means. Results: Epiphany Root Canal Sealant with Primer showed significant inhibitory effects on S. mutans and E. faecalis. The average size of the inhibitory zone of S. mutans induced by Epiphany Root Canal Sealant with Primer and Peridex at 24 hours was 18.67 and 33.83 mm, respectively. In E. faecalis, the average diameter of the inhibitory zone was 14.67 and 16.75 mm for Epiphany Root Canal Sealant with Primer and Peridex, respectively. The differences among Epiphany Root Canal Sealant with Primer and the controls were statistically significant (p<0.001). The Epiphany Root Canal Sealant with Primer and Peridex maintained the same inhibitory zone size up to 7 days. No inhibitory zones were observed in the negative controls. Conclusion: Under conditions of the present study, it is concluded that Epiphany Root Canal Sealant with Primer has significant antimicrobial effects on S. mutans and E. faecalis.
