Effects of Gingident on Treatment of Periodontitis

Oral application of medicaments has therapeutic benefits on periodotitis; however, the mechanism of action has not been elucidated completely. Objective: is to examine the therapeutic effects of Gingident, a natural combination of ingredients (CoEnzyme Q10, Tea Tree Oil, and Olive Oil) in patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis. Methods: Forty patients, 18-70 yrs in age, were selected if they had: 1) 20 or more teeth, 2) 4 sites with probing depths >5mm, 3) bleeding on probing and, 4) radiographic evidence of bone loss. All patient's teeth were initially scaled and root planed. Patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups: Group 1: Gingident placed at the base of all sulci at each appointment, Group 2: same treatment as group 1 plus were instructed to apply Gingident nightly with a special brush, Group 3: received no medicament and Group 4: saline (Placebo) was applied at each appointment. Clinical data were obtaineed at baseline, 1,4,7, and 10 months for probing depths and bleeding on probing. Results: Mean probing depths at baseline for all groups ranged from 2.3 to 4.9 mm. At 4 weeks reevaluation, the probing depths were reduced in all four groups. However, Group 2 had the largest percentage decrease: A 42% decrease in the number of 4-6mm pockets; while Group 1 had 32% decrease, Group 3 and 4 had the least percentage change at 16% decrease. Similar distribution of sites with bleeding on probing were found at baseline and reevaluation of the four groups. Conclusion: The initial data of Gingident showed a therapeutic effect on treating periodontal disease. The best effect occurred when the patients applied the medicament daily.
