Tooth Whitening Efficacy of a New Dentifrice

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical study was to compare the tooth whitening efficacy of Colgate Simply White, a new dentifrice formulation (1.0% hydrogen peroxide, 0.243% sodium fluoride and sodium tripolyphosphate in a high cleaning silica base) to a placebo dentifrice (0.243% sodium fluoride in a silica base) as measured by the Vita Shade Guide. METHODS: Following a baseline examination of the oral soft tissues and a tooth shade assessment using the Vita Shade Guide, qualifying adult male and female subjects from the New Delhi, India area were randomized into two treatment groups balanced for gender, age and tooth shade. Subjects were instructed to brush their teeth twice daily (morning and evening) for two minutes with their assigned dentifrice, using a soft bristled toothbrush that was provided. Examinations of the oral soft tissues and tooth shade evaluations were done at 2 and 4 weeks of product use. RESULTS: At both the 2 and 4 week tooth shade evaluations, subjects using Colgate Simply White dentifrice exhibited statistically significant tooth shade lightening relative to baseline tooth shade and statistically significant tooth shade lightening relative to the placebo dentifrice. At two weeks, the mean shade tab difference from baseline was 4.10 for Colgate Simply White dentifrice and 0.74 for the placebo dentifrice. At four weeks, the mean shade tab difference was 5.20 for Colgate Simply White dentifrice and 0.91 for the placebo dentifrice. CONCLUSION: The results of this clinical study support the conclusion that the Colgate Simply White dentifrice formulation containing hydrogen peroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate is efficacious in tooth whitening and is superior to the placebo dentifrice in tooth whitening efficacy.
