Clinical Comparison of Two Commercially-Available Overnight Use Tooth Whitening Products

Objective: The objective of this examiner blind, randomized, parallel clinical study was to compare two tooth whitening products, Colgate Simply White Night Clear Whitening Gel containing 25% carbamide peroxide and Crest Night Effects containing 19% sodium percarbonate. Method: Eighty adult male and female subjects from the Central New Jersey area were evaluated for baseline tooth whitening scores using the Vita Shade Guide Method of Assessment. The two treatment groups were balanced based on tooth shade scores, age and gender and randomly assigned to one of the two test products. All subjects received a soft-bristled toothbrush and a commercially-available non-whitening dentifrice for home use. Subjects were instructed to brush their teeth for one minute twice daily (morning and evening) with the toothpaste provided. Subjects were instructed to use their assigned tooth whitening product one time at night as per instructions provided by the manufacturer. After two weeks use, subjects reported back to the clinical facility for a Vita Shade Guide Assessment. Results: After two weeks use of the products, the subjects using the Colgate Simply White Night product achieved a mean 3.14 tooth shade lightening of their teeth while the group using the Crest Night Effects achieved a mean 2.69 tooth shade lightening of the teeth. There was no statistically significant difference between the tooth whitening efficacy of the two products. Conclusion: It can be concluded that after two weeks use, both tooth whitening products provided statistically significant tooth whitening efficacy as compared to baseline vita shade scores. It can also be concluded that both products provide comparable tooth whitening efficacy.
