In Vivo Effects 5% NaF-Varnish over S mutans on Enamel

The objective: of this in vivo study was to evaluate the quantitative effects of a 5% NaF Varnish (SFV) over S mutans colonization on human enamel. Material and Methods: 44 patients, 20 -30 years were enrolled, according to the following criteria: full dentition, not medicated with antibiotics in the previous 2 months, healthy systemic condition, no caries activity, no periodontal disease, and no local application of fluoride or antibacterial mouth rinse in the previous 2 months. The patients were randomly assigned in two groups. A: 22 patients treated with 3 applications of SFV (Duraphat, Colgate Inc) in 15 days, and B, without any treatment as Control Group. Six enamel surfaces in each patient were sampled determining the CFUs, at baseline, 1 week, 3 months and 6 months. The samples were spread onto a culture media TYCSB agar and incubated at 37 ºC under 3-5% CO2 for 48 h, after that count of CFUs adhered to the agar was performed. Mean value expressed in Log_CFUs/ml (SD)for each samples. The comparison groups were performed with Student Test. Results: Group A at Baseline, one week, 3 month and 6 month: 4.43 (±0.18), 4.10 (±0.17), 4.30 (±0.19), 4.40 (±0.16) and Group B at Baseline, one week, 3 month and 6 month: 4.36 (±0.21), 4.36 (±0.19), 4.35 (±0.23), 4.35 (±0.20) Conclusions: Three applications of 5% SFV showed a significant reduction in S.mutans only at one week,(p<0,05) but the reduction was not significant on time (p>0,05)
