The Effection of Inhibition Lactic Acid of Bacteria by PEG

Abstract Objectives: To observe the effects of inhibition lactic acid production of streptococcus mutans with different concentration of polyethylene glycol(PEG). Methods: Four different concentration(1-4%) of PEG-200(PEG of molecular weight 200) and PEG-400 were incubated with streptococcus mutans at 24h and 48h respectively. Then, the quantity of lactic acid production of streptococcus mutans was analyzed by high resolution gas-liquid chromatography. Results: It was showed that the quantity of lactic acid production of the group of PEG-200 was significantly better than that of PEG-400 after incubated at 24h(P<0.001), especially 4% PEG-200. Conclusion: It was effective in inhibition of lactic acid production of streptococcus mutans by low-molecular weight PEG with the incubate time of 24h, especially 4% PEG-200.We hope that the study should be explored to a great extent.
