Cholesterol and Triglycerides in Serum from Subjects with Aggressive Periodontitis

Objective: The aim was to study the levels of C-reactive Protein (CRP), total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in serum from subjects with aggressive periodontitis. Methods: The material consisted of 9 subjects, with aggressive periodontitis, Ap-group, mean age 51.5(+- 2.7SD) years and 32 subjects with no periodontal disease, H-group,50.6 (+-3.1 SD)years as controls. The subjects were followed for 18 years. They were clinically examined. Blood samples were collected and testsubstances were determined in serum with following methods: nephelometry (CRP, sensitive), photometry (cholesterol, triglycerides). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was the statistical method used. Results: Ap-group had significantly (p<0.001) higher values of all clinical parameters than H-group. CRP was higher in the Ap-group 4.60(+-1.73SE)mg/L compared to the H-group 2.49(+-1.03SE)mg/L The levels of total cholesterol as well as LDL-cholesterol were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the Ap-group compared to H-group, for cholesterol 5.90(+-35SE) and 5.30 (+-0.12SE)mmol/L and for LDL-cholesterol 4.01(+-0.31SE) and 3.33(+-0.12SE)mmol/L, respectively. The levels of triglycerides were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the Ap-group 1.59(+-0.23SE) mmol/L compared to H-group, 1.09(+-0.10SE) mmol/L Conclusions: Markers in serum from subjects with aggressive periodontitis might indicate risk for cardiovascular disease.
