Evaluation of the Technical Quality in the Elaboration of Dowel

Objectives: to evaluate factor relationated with technical quality of dowel core made by Faculty of Dentistry, Campeche University. . Methods:A transversal and retrospective observational study was made. The files of all subjects with dowel core in the period between March and August of 2000 were evaluated. The inclusion criteria were: teeth with endodontically treated with radiographic evidence of apical sealed, apical sensivity absence on pressure, without exudates and fistula , inflammation free and x rays taken with parallel technique. A dowel core was technically and adequate defined if a two-thirds parts of de teeth root was occupied with 3 mm. Gutta-percha in the apex. To evaluate the association between technical quality of dowels core and age, gender, teeth type variables a multiple logistic regression analysis was made. 70 dowel core were evaluated. Results:The average age was de 31.1± 9.1. 59% were women. 54% of dowel core was technically adequate. In this model a interaction between gender and teeth type was identified (chi2 = 2.39 p=0.08). the women did not have an increment on risk of having a technically inadequate dowel core for all three evaluated type of teeth. However, men shown 44% more probability of having an inadequate dowel core on their premolar teeth, while this risk increased almost the triple on molar teeth. Conclusion: Risk of having a technically inadequate dowel core is related with gender and teeth type. The molar on men may be considerate as teeth with a high risk of been treated in an inadequate way. These results suggest than a intervention needs to be made to improve the technical quality of dowel core.
