In-vitro Evaluation of a Dual-chambered Dentifrice with Dentin
Previous studies with enamel have documented the improved anticaries benefit of a clinically proven dual chambered dentifrice containing sodium fluoride (NaF) in one component and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (Dical) in the other1. Objective: A cyclic remineralization/demineralization (remin/demin) study was run to examine the remineralization potential, resistance to demineralization and the ability of the test dentifrice to incorporate fluoride into dentin. Methods: The cyclic remin/demin study was performed for 20 days, after which, the remineralization potential was measured. The demineralization potential was measured after specimens were subsequently subjected to a four-hour acid challenge. Both measurements were obtained via microradiography. The fluoride content of each specimen was then determined upon completion of the remin/demin study. The evaluations were conducted with (A) 1100 ppm NaF/Dical, (B) 1100 ppm NaF Silica (positive control) and (C) Placebo (negative control). Results: The change of mineral content after treatment were (A) = 751±100, (B) = 429±66 and (C) = -934± 113. The resistance to an acid challenge after treatment, expressed as change of mineral content were (A) = 540±123, (B) = 290±66 and (C) = -1934±136. The fluoride uptake results were (A) = 7333±483µg/cm3, (B) = 5777±335µg/cm3 and (C) = 826±68µg/cm3.
Conclusions: The cyclic remineralization/demineralization experiment indicated significantly more remineralization with the dual chambered dentifrice versus the positive control. The dual chamber dentifrice experienced less demineralization after acid challenge and exhibited significantly more fluoride uptake than the positive control.
