Bond Strength of Self-etching Adhesive to Human Enamel and Dentin

Purpose: Tensile bond strengths of 37% phosphoric acid/One-Step Plus (PA, 5th generation) and Tyrian SPE/One-Step Plus (SPE, 6th generation) bonding systems to human enamel and superficial dentin were investigated with 5 composites. Methods: Buccal and lingual enamel and superficial dentin surfaces of molars were prepared. Five composites were used for bonding to the teeth with 2 bonding systems in the form of a truncated cone. Bonding systems were used following manufacturer’s instructions. Specimens were subjected to 1000 thermocycles in 5 and 55 C water with a dwell time of 20 seconds in each temperature bath. Specimens were debonded with a testing machine at 0.5 mm/min. Results: Means with standard deviations in parenthesis (n=5) are listed.

Fisher’s PLSD intervals (p=0.05) for comparisons of means among composites, between substrates and between 2 bonding systems were 3.4, 2.1 and 2.1MPa, respectively. Bond failures were mixed. Conclusions: After thermocycling, the PA bonding system had higher bond strengths than the SPE bonding system in both enamel and dentin with all 5 composites. The SPE bonding system performed better on enamel than dentin with all 5 composites. Supported by NIH/NIDCR T35 DE07252-09. Products provided by manufacturers.
