Poly(vinylsiloxane) Bond Strength with Different Adhesives to Two Tray Materials

Objectives: Bond strength of PVS impression material varies depending on the tray material. Universal adhesives for PVS are used in practice, but comparative bond strengths have not been reported. This study tested the bond of three PVS materials with a methylmethacrylate and a light cured tray material, using the manufacturer’s adhesive, and two universal adhesives (Paint-on, and spray-on). Methods: 180 flat 15x15 mm samples were made from the two tray materials and finished to 320 grit with silicon carbide paper. Adhesives were applied and dried following manufacturer’s instructions, or for10 minutes. Three impression materials were auto-mixed and injected into a perforated cylinder positioned in an Instron Universal machine, and tray specimens positioned against the open cylinder end in contact with the PVS material. Tensile tests (cross head speed 5 mm/min) were conducted until failure. Means and Standard errors for each material combination were calculated in MPa. Data was analyzed with Welch ANOVA and Tukey (p<0.01). Results: With all impression and tray materials, the universal spray-on adhesive consistently demonstrated significantly lower bond strengths compared to all other groups (p<0.01). Significantly higher bond strength values were found for one of the impression materials with both tray materials when used with the universal paint-on adhesive compared to the two other adhesives (p<0.01). Conclusion: Under these testing conditions, the universal spray-on adhesive demonstrated significantly lower bond strength values by comparison to the other tested adhesives.
