2-year Clinical Performance of 6 Direct Class 2 Resins
OBJECTIVE: To document clinical performance of 6 Class 2 resins.
METHODS: 35-37 restorations per material were placed in 1st or 2nd molars in 117 patients by 20 dentists using rubber dam & modified Black preps. Manufacturers directions were followed strictly for adhesive placement. Resins were cured with conventional halogen light. Placement, finishing, & grading were standardized. Criteria graded in vivo: caries; color match; sensitivity & contacts. In vitro grading using gold sputtered dies & SEM photos: breakage; margin adaptation; pitting; surface smoothness; & wear of opposing teeth. Wear was measured quantitatively (CRA Measurement System. JDR 69:126 #140 90). Statistics: GLM & Tukeys HSD multiple comparison test was used for scale & parametric data & Fishers Exact Test was used for percentage data (α =0.05).
RESULTS: Breakage, margin adaptation, pitting, surface smoothness, & wear showed statistical differences. The 6 resins all performed adequately & did not differ in the other criteria. Mean results for significant characteristics are below. (Grade scale best to worst: 1=alpha; 2=beta; 3=charlie; 4=delta; 5=epsilon.)
CONCLUSIONS: Surefil had statistically least wear & was in the top significance group of 3 of the 4 other significant criteria graded.
