Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Fibrinogen, C-reactive Protein (CRP), and Cholesterol in Serum from Subjects with Aggressive Periodontitis

Objectives: The aim was to study the levels of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Fibrinogen, C-reactive Protein (CRP), and Cholesterol in serum in serum from subjects with aggressive periodontitis. Methods: The material consisted of 10 males, never smokers with aggressive periodontitis, Ag-group, mean age of 51.5 (± 2.7 SD) years and 19 healthy never smoking males, H-group, 50.6 (± 3.1 SD) years as controls. The subjects had been followed for 15 years. They were clinically examined. Blood samples were collected and test substances were determined in serum with following methods: ELISA (IL-6), coagulation (fibrinogen), turbidimetry (CRP), and photometry (cholesterol). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was the statistical method used. Results: Ag-group had significantly (p<0.001) higher values of all clinical parameters than H-group. The levels of IL-6 was significantly higher (p<0.01) in the Ag-group 19.73 (±2.30 SE) pg/mL compared to H-group, 9.23 (±2.11 SE) pg/mL. The levels of fibrinogen was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the H-group 3.0 (±0.09SE) g/L compared to the Ag-group, 2.59 (±0.15SE) g/L. CRP was higher in the Ag-group 3.50 (±1.69SE) mg/L compared to the H-group 1.35 (±0.32SE) mg/L. Conclusion: Agressive periodontitis seems to induce inflammatory response in the blood.
