The Prevalence of Idiopathic Osteosclerosis and Condensing Ostitis in South Taiwan Population
Objective: The purpose of this study was to document the prevalence and anatomic location of idiopathic osteosclerosis (IO) and condensing osteitis (CO) in South-Taiwan population. Method: Full-mouth intraoral radiographs of 1018 patients, with 558 males (54.81%) and 460 females (45.19%), were examined for the presence of radiopaque mass that could not be definitely classified or related to any source. Age ranged from 17 to 89 years, a mean age 49.8 years. Result: A total of 158 lesions in 136 patients (13.68%) were detected, 104 IO in 96 patients (9.43%) and 54 CO in 46 patients (4.51%). Two patients had three lesions, 18 had two, and the rest had only one. Of the 136 patients, a total of 62 (45.59%) were males, 74 (54.41%) were females, and there was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of IO and CO between males and females (c square test). There were 58 lesions located in mandibular anterior region (36.71%), and 100 lesions located in madibular premolar-molar region (63.29%). The sizes of lesion were from a minimum of 3 mm to more than 18 mm in greatest extent. Conclusion: The results of full-mouth intraoral radiographs finding on IO and CO in South-Taiwan population are higher than other investigators, and most lesions were located in the mandibular premolar-molar region.
