Characteristics of a Dual-cure Resin Cement ''PANAVIA F 2.0''

We have developed a dual-cure adhesive resin cement "PANAVIA F 2.0" (PNF 2.0) as an advanced type of "PANAVIA F" (PNF, Kuraray Medical Inc.). PNF 2.0 consists of self-etching primer (ED Primer 2) which is comprised of the adhesive phosphate monomer (MDP), HEMA and water, and dual-cure paste (PF2) which is comprised of MDP, comonomers, fillers, initiators and functionalized sodium fluoride that is contained in the paste of "PANAVIA F" (PF). Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the mechanical property and the adhesive property of PNF 2.0 with those of PNF. Methods: & Results: Flexural strength test: Pastes were polymerized by different curing lights: a halogen light unit "LITEL-II" (LI, Ushio inc.) or a blue LED light unit "CoolBlu" (CL, DentalSystems.com) or by self-cure (SC) in the mold (2mm x 2mm x 30mm). The cured specimens were submerged in water at 37degrees for 1 day. Flexural strength [MPa, (SD)] were (PF2/PF): (LI) 79(10)/79(15), (CL) 83(10)/0(0), (SC) 77(5)/75(12). Adhesion tests: human enamel (E) and dentin (D) were dressed using wet SiC papers of up to 1000 grit. The substrate surfaces were pretreated with self-etching primer. Stainless steel cylinders were adhered to the substrate surfaces with PNF 2.0 or PNF paste, which were cured by SC. The specimens were submerged in water at 37degrees for 1 day. Shear bond strengths [MPa, (SD)] were (PNF2.0 / PNF): (E) 35.2(2.1)/36.3(4.6), (D) 21.9(6.1)/ 21.0(5.1). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that PNF 2.0 provided improved flexural strength while PNF showed zero strength in case of using LED light. In addition, PNF 2.0 showed as high bond strength to tooth substrates as PNF. These properties, such as superior mechanical and adhesive properties of PNF 2.0 would be effective performance in the clinical application.
