Methods: 14 periodontal subjects with type 2 DM, received periodontal therapy described as a one stage full-mouth scaling and root planning. At baseline and after 3 months, the HbA1c value was assessed, and the following clinical parameters were recorded: plaque, probing depth (PD), suppuration, bleeding on probing and relative attachment level (RAL) with computerized probing and individualized acrylic stents. Also they received a two-weekly plaque control.
Results: Non-surgical periodontal treatment significantly reduced the HbA1c values after the three-month observation period, with a statistically significant change of 8.75% to 7.72% (P=0.0086). Also the patients showed decreased PD of 0.8 mm (P=0.000) and RAL loss of 0.1mm (P=0.001).
Conclusions: These results provide additional evidence to support an association between periodontal health and improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 DM.
