Clinical evaluation of 498 tetracycline stained teeth treated with laminates made with Cerinate Porcelain

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance for average of 3 years of 498 tetracycline stained teeth treated with Cerinate(Den-Mat) laminates with or without opaque (OP) layer and bonded with True Vitality( Den-Mat) dual curing composite resin. Methods: 498 Cerinate laminates were fabricated by one technician and placed in 50 patients mouth by three dentists in one section. Of 498 laminates 178 were fabricated with OP layer for heavy discolored teeth, and 320 without OP layer were for light stained teeth. The CDA quality evaluation system was used for assessment of marginal integrity and esthetics. Results: For all 498 laminates, there was only one laminate without OP layer debonded one month after finishing for mistaken bonding procedure. Six laminates of one patient without OP layer were remade for too dark color. The marginal integrity was considered as excellent or acceptable for 96% of all laminates, and there was no difference for two groups. The patients found the esthetics to be excellent, but 12 laminates with OP layer of two patients were reluctantly accepted for whitish color appearance. Conclusion: Laminates can be successfully used for discolored teeth, opaque layer does not affect the bonding of laminate to tooth structure.
