Endodontic Management on Patients with HIV: A Literature Review

Objectives: Pulp and periapical diseases and endodontic management on HIV cases has been challenging, considering the condition of immunity compromised, and the particular seroconversion. Comprehension of endodontic management is required to treat pulp and periapical diseases on HIV-infected patients. This literature review aims to provide information to general practitioners and endodontist specialists on the comprehension of endodontic management on HIV-infected patients, including the risk of sero-conversion to avoid transmission.
Methods: The search was conducted using the following key words: “endodontic management” and “endodontic management on HIV” alone or in combination with “literature review,” “pulpectomy,” “HIV” “infection control,” and “case report.”
Results: The findings from reviewed articles were sectioned into several chapters in relation to the topic required, which are: HIV, Endodontic Management, Endodontic Management on HIV patient, Case Reports, Infection Control.
Conclusions: There are no significant differences on the results of endodontic treatments on patients with or without HIV. Immune responses of periodontal and periapical tissues on HIV cases are more likely causing more severe symptoms of pain and/or apical/periodontitis lesions. These in facts show that endodontic management are immediately required, especially on HIV patients. There are no differences of treatment the cases on HIV or non HIV patients, as long as endodontic management, infection control in particular, were highly performed. Universal precaution of infection control protocol must be performed equally in endodontic treatment, on HIV or non-HIV patients. Information and training regarding treatment procedures and infection control protocol that is equal to all patients (universal precaution) are required to decrease the risk of HIV transmission. Universal precaution on infection control will result in an immediate treatment on pulp or periapical diseases, which will control the progress and severity of the diseases, particularly on HIV patients with immuno-compromised.
